KITES

This piece from Rey’s newest series is inspired by “papalotes” - kites - that he built as a boy in his native Cuba. He says, "In this series I explore themes of youthful playfulness, contemplation of my life in Cuba before emigrating to the US, and the colors of home.

Most of my work includes found objects like oars and artifacts embedded in the painting. However, in these new pieces I explore the idea of “KITES” through the texture and material of fiber adhered to wood through many layers of paint. The materiality of my new series references the kite catching the wind and the sail that is part of my immigration story. "
